The disaster management cell, along with the district administration, have decided to conduct an evacuation drill in 101 schools in Gautam Budh Nagar district on April 27. The schedule for the drill was fixed by the district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar, Nagendra Pratap Singh, following a meeting with the principals of 101 schools affiliated to the Central Board School Education (CBSE) and UP Board at Indira Gandhi Kala Kendra in Sector 6 on Tuesday.

Around 200 people, including principals of all the participating schools, district administration officials and several disaster management experts, participated in the meeting. The district magistrate emphasised the importance of safety programmes and evacuation drills for school students to mitigate the effects of any disaster. He said that it is imperative for residents of Noida to be prepared as the city falls in Seismic Zone 4. “We have to be well prepared for any eventuality, such as a major earthquake,” he said.

Dr Kumar Raka, the planning specialist and the head of the disaster management cell, was also present at the meeting. He answered queries related to the planning, methodology and implementation of necessary measures, including the preparedness drill, posed by the participating principals and other stakeholders.
He also said that a coordinating representative was also nominated by the participating schools and students would be trained by the disaster management cell of Noida, in batches.  Earthquake evacuation drill in 101 Schools in the district will be conducted on the same day and at the same time. Officials said that an earthquake of 6.5 or higher magnitude on the Richter scale will be simulated, and students will be taught to safely evacuate their classroom and school premises.
Officials said that this would be the first- of- its- kind drill conducted in the country. The representatives of Guinness World Records and Limca Book of Records have also been contacted to document the drill. Over one lakh students will participate in the drill.

Rehearsal drills

The schools will conduct a few rehearsal drills before the final drill. Stating that Noida fell in seismic zone IV, the District Magistrate said:
