| Overview |

For the first time since its inception in 1961, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, ventured into school education with a belief that “Higher Education cannot perform unless school system perform”. |
The intention was to bring together the practitioners and researchers around the globe under one roof and give them a platform to disseminate their findings and initiate a reaction for further research and development in the area of school education. |
And the response has been astonishing, with what we can term as the convergence of the industry and academia. With 200 papers received, we witnessed a tremendous desire among the domain experts to contribute to the school domain, with participation from around 350 schools,
(List attached) we found a similar desire among participants to absorb and incorporate the learning for the benefit of schools. |

Dignitaries from the government who addressed the conference included Mrs. Anshu Vaish, Secretary-MHRD, Shri. Vineet Joshi, Chairman- CBSE and other senior officials from NCERT, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and MHRD. The Chairperson of Ryan International Mrs. Grace Pinto, Chairman of ONGC Schools Mr. M. V. Cherian and many others also addressed the conference.
Out of the 50 International and 150 National papers received, nearly sixty were selected for presentations. Speakers came from all over the globe, including countries such as U.S.A, U.K, Singapore, Malaysia, Macedonia, Nigeria and the Middle East.
So far, the thrust of the educational system in India has been on reach, inclusion and excellence. Although the government is putting great emphasis on reach and inclusion, the models and approaches to excellence are too few and far in between. IITs in general and IIT-D in particular seem to have proved that excellence in education can be achieved in a government system. There are also models of excellence in the school system and the achievements of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Delhi Government Schools, the DPS and the Ryan Schools are a case in point. However one must admit that countries like Finland, South Korea and Singapore seem to perform better than others. Keeping this in mind, the conference explored the best practices in school education and attempted to debate the drivers of excellence and their limitations.
The conference also explored the issues of quality, information technology and values in school education amongst others. The importance of education in achieving sustainable development was highlighted by Dr. Chaudhry, who emphasized that value inculcation must form an integral part of the same, as excellent education without value testaments has the potential to produce brilliant criminals. The conference ended on a positive note. |
